Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU): Which colllege to join?

UPTU results were announced today. Now that you have got your result you would be wondering which college to join. If you are in not the top 500 then it will be quite a difficult question to answer. In some cases even if you are in the top 500 it is still very difficult. I have passed out of UPTU and know a thing or two about it.

Here are my suggestion as to what things would matter when you decide to join a particular college.

Don't try to rate any college based on a ranking which you saw in a particular magazine or on a site. They are all cooked up (bought would be more appropriate). If you don't believe me post me a link to any such ranking and I will show you anomalies which even you would recognize.

Should you go for a branch or college? I have been asked this question by students umpteenth number of times. My answer to it is do you know what doing a engineering in a particular stream means? Do you know what subject you would study and how different is it from other streams. The answer I get most often is no. If you are also one of those people then either go for college or try getting answers to these questions by talking to people who have done their engineering in that stream (btw I am a CS graduate).

The most bizarre answer that I get is that I did computers in school and hence I want to study CS. You didn't study computers in school you studied either C/Java or Word in school. That is not what we mean by Computer Engineering. To make matter worse if you didn't study a subject named mechanical or electronics in school doesn't mean you are not meant for them. Believe me doing computers in school is not reason enough to join computer engineering.

I want to study CS and not IT.
In UPTU there is practically no difference between the two streams. The difference is only about 4-5 subject and those subjects are the ones which hardly matters. So if you are getting IT in a good college go for it.

Placements
Barring HBTI every other college receives the same companies. So if you are getting admission in a OK College (When I say OK I mean colleges which have been existing for some time and have placed people) near your home. Go for it. It doesn't make sense to study in a college 700 KM away from home.

If you have any question feel free to ask them here.
