My Expectations From The Next Government
Sunday, May 17, 2009
So election are finally over. UPA has won and Manmohan Singh is going to be sworn in as the next prime minister. Here is my wish-list for the new government
SWAT like force in all cities not only the major cities
After the 26/11 Chidambaram promised more NSG hubs. I want to take this moment to advise to him that why should only some cities get NSG. Haven't the terror strikes taken in place like Coimbatore and Jaipur? Just because television channels don't cover these attacks live are these attacks less serious. One problem is that there is not enough manpower to create so many NSG hubs. A possible solution is a SWAT like force in every police department. Let them be a notch below the NSG but at least train them to tackle AK-47 wielding terrorist if the need arose.
Abolish DRDO, get private corporation in defence sector a la Lockhead Martin.
It is no secret that DRDO is a failure. It has little to show off its achievement and whatever it does actually have makes me wonder that had it been a private company would we have got the same result cheaper and quicker. Its high-time that DRDO is revamped. It would be best if DRDO is scrapped but if that is not possible then atleast they should be audited.
Liquidate BSNL, MTNL, Air India and other PSUs in sectors where there is enough competition.

In my opinion telecommunication and aviation sector have enough competition now and its about time that the telecom and aviation behemoths should be sold off.
A central autonomous police system.
Time and time again CBI, CID and police have been accused of corruption and manipulation. Reforms are needed and the best thing that could be done is to make the police system autonomous. This would make the police system to be not influenced by political parties and probably it would change for the better
Government funding for private colleges as well. Albeit with a criteria that they should improve their quality.
Private Colleges are here and are here to stay. We have to accept this. They have propped up because of the states inability to provide enough avenues of education for millions of people. Now government should accept this and let them function as profit making organization openly. The effort of the government should be to make sure students are fleeced. Even if that is not done I don't care because I know that there are enough private colleges in this nation at this moment for the market to take over and quality would inevitably follow. The more important thing is that government should assist and push the private colleges into improving their quality. One way is to fund them for improving their existing infrastructure i.e. labs, libraries and last but not the least improving the quality of the teachers.
Few more IIMs
More IIMs have been promised. Please deliver them as quickly as possible. I'm vying for one IIM seat :D

"Government has no business running businesses and it should get out of it. India has wasted a lot of money in last 50 years on sick public sector undertakings. I am of the view that government's job is only to look after areas of health, education and law and order"I don't completely subscribe to his view. My opinion is that government PSU should be allowed to exist in only those areas where there is not enough competition. PSU are inherently inefficient and thus the public would be better served if the PSU are disinvested once there is enough competition in the sector.
