India in next 20 years
Thursday, February 5, 2009
In 20 years from now India will be what we will make India in the next 20 years. We are young and the next 20 years will be our age. The onus would be on us. Lets see what we can do?
Infrastructure, infrastructure and infrastructure
This is one cause of concern that has dawned on the government. After sleeping for nearly 50 years we have woken up to the fact that we cannot have a nation comparable to the west unless we have infrastructure comparable to them. We need better roads, hospital, schools, institutes of higher learning, airports etc. etc. etc. The list is endless. We need to improve everything we can.
India's product would always suffer in international market unless we have roads to take them to port in cheaply and efficiently. As a matter of fact India has a surplus of food grains still almost negligible amount is exported. This results in farmer who form the major part of India's population remaining poor. A better road network coupled with food processing capability could ensure their growth as well.
Winds of change are blowing, Delhi and Mumbai airport are being upgraded. Bangalore and Hyderabad have new airport. Delhi Metro is state of art. Road conditions have improved significantly. Yet India was so far behind that this is not enough. We need to accelerate the growth or we will squander another opportunity that history has provided us.
Education
India has been literacy rate of 61.3 as compared to china which has a literacy percentage of 90.9. This is one area where the wannabe knowledge power has to improve significantly. Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan has succeeded in opening over 160000 schools since its inception in 1994, yet a lot need to be done if India wants to improve her own state and the state of its people.
Business
India's image globally has improved significantly in the last few years and that is largely due to the success of Indian diaspora and Indian companies. They are taking the world by storm. With its cost effectiveness and a large and cheap labor pool India would continue to remain hot in the next 20 years. The challenge is to rub on the success of Indian industry to other sectors. Other than that we should strive to make laws ad conducive to doing business as possible. Labor laws and the archaic property laws need to be revamped.
Science & Technology
India has made commendable progress in the area of science and technology with the icing on the cake being recent chandrayan mission. We have a robust pharmaceuticals, IT, space industry. An area of improvement here is our education setup which is crumbling. We produce over 500000 engineers every year and over 1.2 million graduates but quality of most of these graduates is suspect. We need to move fast to improve the quality of the engineers and graduates we produce if we aim to become a super power.
